Why recycling matters in the fashion industry
With environmental concerns growing ever stronger, recycling has become a necessity for fashion businesses. The textile industry is responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions and uses vast quantities of water. Making surf wetsuits, for example, generates neoprene waste, a tough material that is very hard to break down. In response, our brand chose to turn these wetsuits into accessories, reusing a durable material while reducing the environmental footprint.
Collecting surf wetsuits: a first step towards a durable product
To create our glasses, we start by collecting used wetsuits from individuals, surf and dive schools in south-west France, and manufacturers of neoprene wetsuits. Rather than being thrown away, these wetsuits are recovered, sorted, then taken to our workshop. Collecting locally also reduces the impact of transport and is part of an eco-responsible approach.
The transformation process: from neoprene to eyewear frames
Once collected, the wetsuits are cleaned, cut and then ground into a neoprene powder. This powder is mixed with a bio-based resin, then injected into aluminium moulds. Out of the mould, each frame passes through the hands of our team: sanding, fitting, checking. Thanks to the properties of neoprene, these frames are tough, light and comfortable to wear.
